BBB Secure Your ID Day

Be the first line of defense when it comes to protecting identity. Better Business Bureau serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington is teaming up with Wells Fargo to host Secure Your ID Day on October 18 at the Tacoma Mall Parking Lot.  This identity theft prevention event features free on-site shredding and tips to protect your identity. Mobile shredding trucks will be on-site accepting up to three bags or boxes of unwanted documents per person.  Please note that cardboard and three-ring binders cannot be accepted.

The Office of Minority and Women’s Business Enterprises (OMWBE) and Washington Procurement & Technical Assistance Center are teaming up to provide workshops for businesses who wish to gain a competitive advantage with State or Federal certification.  OMWBE is the sole certifying agency for minority, women, and disadvantaged small businesses in Washington State. Meet with the certification experts from OMWBE who will talk about the benefits of the certifications and walk you through the application to help you with any sticking points. 

This workshop is great if you are thinking of applying and want to get a handle on the application, or you've already started applying and have questions on any section.

Affordable Care Act 101 Webinars for Small Business

The SBA and Small Business Majority are holding weekly Affordable Care Act 101 webinars. During the presentation, small business owners can learn about the law and what it means for their company and employees. Starting July 8th, Spanish-speaking small employers throughout the country can join representatives from SBA, HHS, and Small Business Majority for ACA 101 webinars in Spanish. Tax-filing and Payment Extensions Expire Oct. 15; Check Eligibility for Overlooked Tax Benefits; Choose E-file; E-pay with New Direct Pay

The Internal Revenue Service today urged taxpayers whose tax-filing extension runs out on Oct. 15 to double check their returns for often-overlooked tax benefits and then file their returns electronically using IRS e-file or the Free File system.  More than a quarter of the nearly 13 million taxpayers who requested an automatic six-month extension this year have yet to file. Although Oct. 15 is the last day for most people, some still have more time, including members of the military and others serving in Afghanistan or other combat zone localities who typically have until at least 180 days after they leave the combat zone to both file returns and pay any taxes due.

 

Tax Payments Top the One Million Mark with New IRS Direct Pay; Free Online System Makes it Easy for People to Pay Their Federal Taxes

With more than one million tax payments already processed this year through IRS Direct Pay, the Internal Revenue Service today encouraged anyone facing upcoming tax payment deadlines to consider choosing this free online system to quickly and easily pay what they owe. More than one million tax payments totaling over $1.7 billion have been received from individual taxpayers since Direct Pay debuted earlier this year. Available through the Pay Your Tax Bill  icon on IRS.gov, Direct Pay allows individuals to e-pay their tax bills or make quarterly estimated tax payments directly from checking or savings accounts without any fees or pre-registration.

 

NOTE: Direct Pay cannot be used to pay business taxes. Taxpayers who wish to e-pay their federal business taxes should enroll in the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), or click on the Pay Your Tax Bill icon to check out other payment options.

There is a new page on IRS.gov with links to information on the Affordable Card Act – although the page is titled ‘for Tax Professionals’ there is good information on it for payroll professionals and small businesses. New YouTube Videos Provide Tips on Health Care, Tax Returns

Several new YouTube videos are available to help taxpayers get important information about the Affordable Care Act and tax return filing. The new videos, which are part of a series on the IRS YouTube channel, feature IRS Commissioner John Koskinen discussing the premium tax credit and the individual shared responsibility provision. These provisions of the Affordable Care Act will affect people's tax returns next year when they file their 2014 returns.

 

In the video about the premium tax credit, the Commissioner talks about how it can help make purchasing health care through the Health Insurance Marketplace more affordable for people with moderate incomes. In the video about the individual shared responsibility provision, Koskinen discusses important facts about coverage requirements, coverage exemptions and the individual shared responsibility payment. He covers who must make a payment, who is eligible for exemptions, and what people need to do when filing their tax return.

 

Drought-Stricken Farmers and Ranchers Have More Time to Replace Livestock; 30 States Affected

Farmers and ranchers who previously were forced to sell livestock due to drought, like the drought currently affecting much of the nation, have an extended period of time in which to replace the livestock and defer tax on any gains from the forced sales, the Internal Revenue Service announced today. Farmers and ranchers who, due to drought, sell more livestock than they normally would may defer tax on the extra gains from those sales. To qualify, the livestock generally must be replaced within a four-year period. The IRS is authorized to extend this period if the drought continues.

 

The one-year extension of the replacement period generally applies to capital gains realized by eligible farmers and ranchers on sales of livestock held for draft, dairy or breeding purposes due to drought. Sales of other livestock, such as those raised for slaughter or held for sporting purposes, and poultry are not eligible.

The IRS is providing this relief to any farm located in a county, parish, city, borough, census area or district, listed as suffering exceptional, extreme or severe drought conditions by the National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC), during any weekly period between Sept. 1, 2013, and Aug. 31, 2014. All or part of 30 states are listed. Any county contiguous to a county listed by the NDMC also qualifies for this relief.  Details on this relief, including a list of NDMC-designated counties, are available in Notice 2014-60,

 

IRS To Realign Compliance Operations

Starting Oct. 20, the IRS is realigning its tax compliance organizations serving individual and small business taxpayers. Realigning core business operations in its Wage and Investment and Small Business/Self-Employed divisions is expected to make processes more efficient. In addition, the realignment will reduce redundancies and position ourselves to improve our ability to identify emerging compliance issues. This change will be seamless for taxpayers and tax professionals. The goal of the realignment is to primarily focus SB/SE on post-filing compliance and W&I on pre-refund compliance.

 

Business E-File Jumps 10 Percent This Year; Doubles in 4 Years; 7 in 10 Corporate and Partnership Tax Returns Now Filed Electronically

Business e-file rose nearly 10% this year, continuing the growth that has seen the number of corporate and partnership returns filed electronically double in just four years. An additional 600,000 corporations and partnerships e-filed their tax returns this year. As of Sept. 21, more than 7 million corporations and partnerships e-filed, an increase of almost 10% over the prior year’s total, and twice the nearly 3.5 million returns e-filed during the 2010 fiscal year. About 70% of all corporate and partnership returns have been e-filed during 2014.
